Genesis 5:1–5:32. Walking with God in the Dark

  • Scripture: Genesis 5:1–5:32
  • The Anchor: “Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.” – Genesis 5:24

Genealogies in the Bible can sometimes feel like a long list of random names, but if you look closely at the family line from Adam to Noah, a few people completely stand out. Of course, Adam was the father of all mankind, and Seth was his offspring who carried on the lineage all the way until Jesus. Other notable names include Methuselah, who lived the longest of anyone in the Bible, and Noah, whose massive story is coming up next.

But two specific men in this list deserve a closer look, starting with Enoch. It’s wild because the New Testament book of Jude actually quotes a prophecy from Enoch, even though Genesis doesn’t explicitly mention that he was a prophet. Enoch is one of only three people in human history to be taken up directly by God without experiencing normal death—the others being the prophet Elijah in a chariot of fire, and Jesus in His ascension. Enoch walked so closely with God in his daily faith that he was handled in a completely supernatural way.

Then there is Lamech. It’s easy to miss unless someone points it out, but there was a guy named Lamech in the previous chapter, too. That first Lamech was the world’s first polygamist and was incredibly prideful about a murder he committed. Contrastingly, the Lamech in today’s passage is the father of Noah. I see this as a beautiful sign of peace in a dark world of sin. Even when there are messed up, prideful people dominating the headlines, God always has people who shine in the darkness. We don’t get to know this second Lamech very well as a person, but his life bore the fruit of righteousness through his son.

Even in a world sliding fast into corruption, you can choose to be the person who walks faithfully with God and shines against the dark backdrop of culture.

Reflection

  1. Enoch’s relationship with God was so tight that it’s described as “walking faithfully” with Him day after day. When you look at your normal routine—between sports, the gym, FCA meetings, and school—what does a practical, daily “walk” with God actually look like for you?
  2. The two men named Lamech show us that you can share the exact same environment or name as someone else, yet choose a completely different path. How can you be intentional about being a person who “shines in the darkness” when people around you at school are choosing a lifestyle of pride or sin?

Prayer

Lord, help me to walk faithfully with You today, just like Enoch did, finding consistency in my faith even when the culture around me gets dark. Give me the strength to shine for You among my school and church friends, and thank You for always preserving a line of peace and hope. Amen.
