Genesis 1:14–1:25 – The Refiner’s Fire

  • Scripture: Genesis 1:14–1:25
  • The Anchor: “God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.” – Genesis 1:16

Have you ever noticed how intentional God is with His timing? In this part of the Creation story, God spins time into motion, hitting the switch on day and night, the sun, moon, and stars. Then He fills the oceans with sea creatures and the skies with birds.

The coolest thing about watching Genesis unfold day by day is seeing how God didn’t just dump everything onto the planet all at once. Every single day, He makes the earth a little better, a little more complete, and a lot closer to the world we know today. It’s a process.

That pattern got me thinking about a huge spiritual parallel: sanctification. That’s a big church word, but it basically just means the lifelong process of God changing us to look more like Jesus.

It reminds me of a testimony a guy named Brian shared at church recently. He talked about how, in every distinct season of his life, God led him to grow in one specific area of his faith—whether it was learning how to actually love difficult people, building a deeper dependence on God, or realizing that Jesus is truly all he needs.

The same exact thing is happening to us. God is a master craftsman, and He is building your character day by day. Let’s be real—every single day of high school isn’t going to feel amazing. Some days feel like a step backward. But over time, as we walk through the “refiner’s fire,” we are being slowly polished and shaped into the image of our perfect role model. God isn’t done creating you yet.

Reflection

  1. Look back at where you were a year ago. What is one specific area of your character, faith, or perspective where you can see that God has slowly “improved” or grown you?
  2. Growth takes time. Is there an area of your life right now where you feel frustrated by a lack of progress (like a bad habit, a relationship, or your prayer life) where you need to trust God’s day-by-day timing?

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You are still working on me. Even when progress feels slow, I trust that You are refining my character every day to make me look a little more like Jesus. Amen.
