Today’s Scripture:
“This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.” — John 2:11 (ESV)
Reflection
Okay so I had this pretty much all written, and then Band decided to crash on me again, so that’s amazing.
Today’s QT is about Jesus’s first miracle and the beginning of His ministry on this earth. This passage takes place in Cana in Galillee, and it is at a wedding. When the host declares that the wine is out, Jesus’s mother tells Him, and Jesus says that His time has not come yet. Jesus then commands the servants and turns around 120-180 gallons of water into the highest quality wine, and the servants bring it to the host. The host declares that the wine is great, and that they saved the best for last. In the end, His disciples believed in Him.
I want to start off by noting how huge of a miracle this was. Both the quality and quantity of the wine were amazing. Wine takes lots and lots of grapes, and also lots and lots of time, and Jesus turned water into wine without either of those, showing His greatness and ability to do huge miracles.
This whole miracle is kind of like a foreshadowing of what is to come. First, Jesus says that His time has not come yet, which of course is talking about His time of death on the cross. Also, Jesus’s miracle of wine foreshadows the wine at the Last Supper, and also the blood that was poured out by Jesus, which is the blood that was poured out for us. Jesus’s blood was of the highest quality (idk about quantity… but it was probably a lot of blood), which was perfection.
P. Abe tied this to hope. He said that the wine represents hope and that when hope runs out, Jesus gives us hope, which is His blood. Just a cool tie in.
Last thing. Just on the topic of miracles, it says at the end that His disciples believed in Him. It really doesn’t occur to us so often, but the truth is, our faith is a miracle. The fact that sinners like us could have a relationship with God is the true miracle that Jesus gave us through His blood. So when I look around at all the Christians around me, I want to see everyone as a miracle that God worked in them. I found myself in awe rediscovering this, and now I feel so much gratitude and warmth from this. Jesus’s miracles still extend to us today.
