- Scripture: Genesis 12:10–12:20
- The Anchor: “So Pharaoh summoned Abram. ‘What have you done to me?’ he said. ‘Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?'” – Genesis 12:18
While he passes through Egypt, Abram lies to Pharaoh, saying that Sarai is his sister instead of admitting that she was his wife. Abram was so worried about his safety that he failed to trust in God. Even through Abram’s disobedience, God protected him and continued to use him for a bigger plan. Pharaoh ended up finding out and rebuked Abram for lying.
We see that even Abram, a faithful man, fails to trust in God. He was concerned about being killed by the Egyptians, and he failed to seek God’s protection in the truth. And we also see God’s amazing grace and mercy, as He protected Abram when he didn’t deserve to be protected.
Sometimes, it’s tempting to take the easy, less complicated way out. Like cheating on a test or using ChatGPT for homework—although the teacher may not know (they probably do), God in heaven sees. We have to know that these things are sinful, but we also should know that God has incredible mercy and grace. I am so thankful for this God.
Reflection
- Abram let his fear of the Egyptians override his trust in God’s protection, choosing a lie over the truth. When you find yourself in a tight spot or a stressful situation at school, how tempting is it to choose a quick, less complicated shortcut rather than doing things the right way?
- Even when Abram messed up completely, God didn’t cancel His plan or abandon him; He showed him unearned grace. How does knowing that God sees everything—yet still treats us with incredible mercy and grace—motivate you to pursue honesty in your daily life?
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I get anxious and try to take the easy way out instead of trusting You in the truth. Thank You that Your grace and mercy aren’t based on my perfect performance, and help me to live honestly before You and my friends today. Amen.
