- Scripture: Genesis 24:28–24:49
- The Anchor: “Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to take the daughter of my master’s kinsman for his son.” – Genesis 24:48
Abraham’s servant arrives at Rebekah’s family home to explain his mission. Laban, Rebekah’s brother, rushes out to meet him at the spring. Upon seeing the expensive gold nose ring and bracelets given to his sister, Laban quickly welcomes the servant into the house, unloads his camels, and provides an abundant environment of hospitality. Despite the long, grueling journey, the servant refuses to eat a single bite of food until he delivers his message. He details the entire story—how God immensely blessed Abraham, the specific oath he swore to his master, and the miraculous confirmation at the well just moments prior. Throughout his explanation, the servant constantly emphasizes that this is entirely Abraham’s plan, and that he is merely a messenger sent to obey. He finishes by directly asking Rebekah’s family if they will show steadfast love and faithfulness to his master.
The biggest takeaway from this passage is that as disciples of God, we are full-time representatives of our Master. Our actions must directly reflect Jesus’s actions, and our ultimate motive must be to serve our Lord. Like the servant, we should live with a distinct sense of urgency to make our Master’s plan and will known to the world.
This is the very heart of evangelism. We need to live with urgency because Jesus could return at any moment. God chooses to work His grand plans through us, which means we must be completely willing to obey at a moment’s notice without making excuses or going our own way. I want to live my life as a faithful servant just like this one.
Reflection
- The servant was so consumed by his master’s business that he refused to sit down and eat a celebratory meal until his mission was clearly spoken. When you think about sharing your faith or living out the Gospel, do you feel that same sense of spiritual urgency, or is it easy to push it off for a more convenient time?
- As a disciple, you are a direct walking advertisement for Jesus to the people around you. Looking back at your past week—during church, throughout your productive study hours, and in your daily conversations—did your actions show people the character of your Master?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for trusting me to be a messenger of Your good news. Forgive me for the times I lack urgency and get too comfortable with my own immediate desires. Train my heart to be completely consumed by Your will, so that my actions, choices, and speech always reflect the true character of Jesus. Amen.
