- Scripture: Genesis 21:1–21:21
- The Anchor: “Sarah said, ‘God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.’ And she added, ‘Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.'” – Genesis 21:6–7
Isaac is finally born and circumcised, and Abraham throws a great feast to celebrate. Sarah is filled with laughter when she receives her son. However, tension rises in the household as Sarah grows jealous of having Hagar and Ishmael around, eventually demanding that Abraham kick them out. Even though they are cast out into the desert, God still keeps His protective hand over Hagar and Ishmael. When their supplies run out and they are completely stranded, God keeps them safe and miraculously provides water for them.
Sarah’s laughter is such a small detail, yet it matters a lot. A few chapters ago, Sarah laughed to herself when God said she would bear a child in her old age. That initial laughter was born out of mockery and unbelief. But today, her unbelief is turned completely into pure joy as she realizes that God’s promises really do come true. Let us also have true joy when God answers His promises to us.
If we remember back to God’s covenant with Abraham, God promised that Abraham’s offspring would produce great nations. While we always think of Isaac as the main heir, Ishmael was also Abraham’s offspring, and God fulfilled His promise through him as well. To fulfill that promise, God protected Hagar and Ishmael, providing them water in the wilderness right when Hagar had lost all hope. God fulfills His promises, and He truly looks after everyone—no matter how much of a side character they might seem to be. I see this as God’s beautiful master plan being guided by His providence in an unpredictable, yet amazing direction.
Reflection
- Sarah’s laughter of cynical unbelief was transformed into a laughter of pure joy when she saw the physical promise in her arms. What is a prayer request or a situation in your life right now where you have let cynicism or doubt take over, instead of waiting for God to turn it into joy?
- God went out of His way to protect and provide for Hagar and Ishmael in the wilderness, showing that He deeply cares for the “side characters.” When you are at school, in orchestra, or hanging out at youth events like Ignite, how can you look past the “main characters” and intentionally show God’s love to the people who feel unnoticed or left out?
Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your beautiful master plan is always working in unpredictable, amazing directions. Thank You that You never overlook the “side characters,” and that You see and care for me whenever I feel overwhelmed or hopeless. Transform my moments of doubt into pure joy as I watch You fulfill Your promises. Amen.
