Genesis 10:1–10:32 – The Geography of the Nations

  • Scripture: Genesis 10:1–10:32
  • The Anchor: “From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.” – Genesis 10:32

The text today is mostly a genealogy, but it shows the distinction between the sons of Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Since the flood wiped away everyone on the earth, the descendants from these three sons filled the whole earth.

I believe the people of Japheth go to inhabit most of Europe, and the sons of Shem conquer out more eastward into parts of Asia and the Middle East. The main thing to look at are the sons of Ham, who are the people who inhabited Africa and the west side of the Middle East. As we learned yesterday, Canaan was the son of Ham, and of course, the Canaanites came from that bloodline. The Canaanites were known for being very sinful, which shows a little bit of fulfillment of yesterday’s passage. Also, it mentions that the descendants of Ham stretched all the way to Sodom and Gomorrah, which are cities that will be introduced later in Genesis.

Reflection

  1. The descendants of Ham established cities like Sodom and Gomorrah, places that became known for wandering far from God. How does this remind us that the environments and cultures we build around ourselves can either pull us closer to God or lead us into sin?
  2. Even in a normal day of ordinary routines—like orthodontist appointments, Chamber rehearsals, and math class—God is actively working out human history. How can you be intentional about bringing God into the “ordinary” parts of your school week?

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You are the Sovereign Ruler over all nations, history, and geography. Keep my feet on a righteous path today, and help me to honor You in both the big moments and my normal daily routines. Amen.
