- Scripture:
- The Anchor: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them… God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” – Genesis 1:27, 31
Genesis 1 wraps up with the crown jewel of Creation: mankind. The Triune God said, “Let us make mankind in our image.” This concept—the Imago Dei—is a game-changer. It means every single human being on this planet, Christian or not, is an official image-bearer of God. Because of that, every single life has undeniable, equal value.
Being an image-bearer means we were wired with God’s characteristics—things like love, creativity, justice, and morality. But let’s be honest: high school hallways are breeding grounds for comparison, gossip, and judgment. It is so easy to look at people through a lens of criticism. After coming off an amazing youth retreat recently, God really challenged my heart on this. Instead of seeing others with judgmental eyes, we need to see the divine value in everyone. As God’s image-bearers, our job is to reflect His character to the world—including His peace.
Part of that reflection means practicing the virtue of care. God didn’t just make Adam and Eve to chill in Eden; He told them to take care of the environment, the animals, and most importantly, each other. When God looked at the stars and oceans, He called them “good.” But when He created mankind, He called us “VERY good.” You are not a cosmic accident; you are special to the Creator.
Finally, chapter 2 opens with God resting on the seventh day—the Sabbath. God is all-powerful; He didn’t need a nap. He rested to set a pattern for us. In the New Testament, the Pharisees got legalistic and grumbled at Jesus’ disciples for picking grain on the Sabbath. Jesus shut them down with a powerful truth: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” The Ten Commandments aren’t a heavy cage of rules meant to ruin our lives; they are reminders of God’s gifts. The Sabbath is a weekly gift of physical and spiritual renewal, not a burden. It’s God carving out a space for us to step away from the pressure of school, sports, and achievements, just to rest in His presence.
Reflection
- Think about someone at your school or in your life who is difficult to love or completely different from you. How does remembering that they are a literal “image-bearer of God” change the way you should treat them?
- With a fresh school semester just around the corner, life is about to get chaotic. What is one practical way you can protect your “Sabbath”—a specific time each week to unplug, rest your body, and renew your spirit with God?
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I look at others with pride or judgment. Help me to see Your image in every person I meet today, and teach me how to truly rest in Your gift of the Sabbath so I can be renewed for what’s ahead. Amen.
