Today’s Scripture:
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” — John 3:30 (ESV)
Reflection
John the Baptist was a witness to Jesus, and when his disciples came to him about Jesus, John answered with joy, saying that he must decrease while Jesus must increase. John is very humble. Quoting Jesus’s talk with Nicodemus, John says that those who receive Jesus’s testimony accepts the fact that God is true. God has given eternal life to all who believe in Jesus, but the wrath of God remains on those who do not believe in Jesus.
This passage is somewhat famous, especially verse 30. Verse 30 should be our mentality as Christians. Instead of trying to glorify ourselves and make ourselves look good in front of others, we should focus on truly glorifying God and giving God all the credit and praise. As we keep doing good works of faith, we should remember that we should decrease, but God should increase through these things.
One of the things that I appreciate about the Bible is its incredible logic. Verse 33 is key to understanding this. The Bible tells us that Jesus is God, and he shares his true testimony to this world. I love how John says that whoever receives the true testimony sets his seal to the truth of God, because the testimony literally is the truth. Jesus is the logos: the divine truth, and when we receive Jesus’s testimony, we receive the divine truth that saves us from our sins. I think that’s pretty cool
