- Scripture: Genesis 49:16-28
- The Anchor: “By the Almighty who will bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that crouches beneath, blessings of the breasts and of the womb. The blessings of your father are mighty beyond the blessings of my parents, up to the bounties of the everlasting hills. May they be on the head of Joseph, and on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers.” – Genesis 49:25–26 (ESV)
In today’s passage, Jacob finished “blessing” all of his sons. Like I said yesterday, these “blessings” are more like prophecies, and the prophecies use metaphors and stuff but they do come true in the rest of the OT. Today, I want to just hone in on Joseph’s blessing. Joseph is called a fruitful bough. A bough is a large tree branch, and Joseph’s bough is said to be by a spring with its branches running over the walls. Although he is harassed by archers, his bow remains unmoved. I think it’s interesting that Joseph is a bough and he has a bow… it’s probably not intended because it was originally written in Hebrew, but it’s cool that both of them have the “bough” sound. Jacob says that his arm is made agile by the same God who blesses him with so many more blessings. Jacob says that Joseph is set apart from his brothers.
When I hear the words “set apart,” I think “holy.” Joseph is blessed to be holy by a holy God. God gives Joseph the agility in his arms, and that reminds me that God is present in all of our lives. God’s hands were on Joseph and He guided him. Also, the symbolism of a bough next to the spring makes me think that God is the spring that is growing Joseph’s roots and his branch.
Reflection
- You connected the metaphor of the “bough by the spring” to Joseph’s life, recognizing that God is the source of his growth and stability. How are you consciously staying “planted” by the Source, especially during seasons where you feel like you are being “harassed by archers” or facing external pressures?
- You noted that being “set apart” implies holiness. In your own life, what does it practically look like to be “set apart” for God while still living in the world, and how does His grace keep you steady when you feel like you are “holding the bow”?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for Joseph’s example of a life sustained by You, the living Spring. When I face opposition or feel the weight of life’s “archers,” remind me that my strength does not come from my own agility, but from Your hand upon me. Help me to live as one truly set apart for Your glory, growing deeper roots in Your Word every single day. Amen.
