Genesis 36:1–43 -The Meaning of a Name

  • Scripture: Genesis 36:1–43
  • The Anchor: “These are the chiefs of Edom (that is, Esau, the father of Edom), according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession.” – Genesis 36:43 (ESV)

The biggest thing I can really pull from this passage is that Esau was really blessed. Even though it says that Jacob was blessed but Esau was hated, it really doesn’t seem like Esau was hated based on how much he was blessed.

I’m not a historian or OT scholar, but it seems like the relationship between Israel and Edom is similar to the relationship between Jacob and Esau before Jacob ran away. Although brothers, they fought with each other. Israel “stole” the blessing from Edom like how Jacob took the birthright from Esau. I guess this is what it means by how Jacob was more blessed than Esau.

The commentary that I’m reading has translations for some of the names on this list. Many of the names are sinful and bad, such as some worshiping Baal, some about wickedness, and some about mountain goats. Edom was blessed, but it wasn’t God’s chosen people. They lived in sin rather than with God. Maybe naming our children godly things is important? My name has many meanings I think, but the one that pops up first from Google Gemini AI summary is “God is Gracious.” My name reflects God like how I want to reflect God in my life. Just a thought that I had!

Reflection

  1. You noticed that even though Edom was physically blessed with wealth and power, they lived in sin rather than with God because they were not His chosen covenant people. When you look at worldly success around you, do you remember that being chosen by God and walking with Him is the truest blessing?
  2. Your own name means “God is Gracious,” reflecting how you want to live your life. As you go through a chill day at school, have lunch conversations, and spend time studying for your AP World test, how can you consciously reflect God’s grace to the friends and family around you?

Prayer

Lord, thank You that my identity is rooted in You and that my life can reflect that You are gracious. Forgive me for the times I look at worldly blessings or success and forget that the greatest gift is simply being chosen to walk with You. Keep me close to Your path, remove any wickedness from my heart, and help me to honor Your name in everything I do today. Amen.
