- Scripture: Genesis 30:1–24
- The Anchor: “Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb. She conceived and bore a son and said, ‘God has taken away my reproach.'” – Genesis 30:22–23 (ESV)
Leah and Rachel fight each other. I was going to say “fighting each other for… something” but I couldn’t even figure out what they were fighting over. Rachel got jealous that she was barren, so she gave Jacob her servant as a surrogate mother, and Bilhah had two kids. She demanded that Jacob give her children, but Jacob understood that God had closed her womb and that he couldn’t do anything about it. Leah stopped bearing children, so she also did the same surrogate mother method with her servant Zilpah to get a few more children.
Reuben, Leah’s firstborn, gets mandrakes from the field. Mandrakes were believed to be fertility boosting, so Rachel exchanged a night with Jacob for some mandrakes. Leah bore Jacob two more sons and one daughter. This raised the child count to 10 boys and one girl. Then God remembered Rachel and opened up her womb, and she bore him Joseph.
From my viewpoint, there is so much sin that took place in this passage, yet God’s work still gets accomplished. These struggles had a purpose. Looking forward to the rest of Genesis, literally the next 20 chapters are somehow about Jacob’s children, and then the rest of the whole Old Testament are somehow related to the 12 tribes of Israel, which were being born in this passage. God uses sins for His glory even though He is not the author of the sins. I know that my mistakes will teach me things for the future, and God will use them for my own good although the actions and thoughts are evil.
Reflection
- Rachel and Leah got so consumed by jealousy and a toxic competition that it was hard to even tell what they were fighting over. When you see your peers succeeding or moving faster than you, do you get bitter and try to force your own solutions, or do you trust God’s timing?
- This messy chapter is where the 12 tribes of Israel were born, proving God uses human struggles for a purpose. After spaces like Ignite or hard water polo practices, does it change your perspective to know God uses your daily grinds and mistakes for your future good?
Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your ultimate work always gets accomplished, even when there is so much human sin and messiness around. Forgive me for the times I let jealousy drive my actions. Thank You that You can use my mistakes to teach me for the future and turn them into my own good. Amen.
